Nerve cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of nerve cells, known as neurones. Nerve cells occur in the brain, spinal cord, and in ganglia. Each nerve cell has a large cell body (brown) with several long processes extending from it. The processes usually consist of one thicker axon and several thinner branched dendrites. The dendrites collect information in the form of nerve impulses from other nerve cells and pass it to the cell body. This information is interpreted by the cell body, and then passed on along the axon. In this way neurones allow information to be rapidly received, interpreted, and relayed around the body. Nerve cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a neuron (nerve cell). The cell body is the central structure with neurites (long and thin structures) radiating outwards from it. A neurite is a general term used for processes connecting nerve cells together to form a network of nervous tissue. They can be either receiving (dendrites) or transmitting (axons) nerve impulses. When grown in culture, as here, it is difficult to tell axons and dendrites apart. Neurons allow information to be received, interpreted and relayed around the body. Research into curing spinal paralysis uses nerve tissue cultures to investigate neural regeneration. Magnification unknown

Each cell body has numerous processes (dendrites), which collect and transmit information from other nerve cells and sensory cells. Each cell body also has an axon (up centre) leading from it, through which it passes information to other cells. The cerebral cortex, also known as the grey matter, is the outer layer of the cerebral hemispheres. It is responsible for the higher brain functions, such as memory, language and consciousness, and for processing sensory input
