As the sun begins to set over the green fields of County Kerry, Ireland, dark clouds gather on the horizon. From atop Strickeen Mountain in Ballagh, a breathtaking view unfolds before my eyes - an expansive vista stretching towards the majestic Atlantic Coast. The scene is reminiscent of a painting; it captures both beauty and foreboding. In this picturesque landscape, nature's elements seem to collide. A hand-coloured engraving titled "Les Anglois Molestes et Chatiees" from 1779 comes to mind - its depiction of turbulent skies mirrors what I witness now. Dark clouds loom overhead like an impending storm, casting shadows upon the tranquil countryside below. London Bridge City stands as a testament to human resilience amidst such atmospheric turmoil. Juxtaposed against these darkened skies, its iconic architecture remains steadfast and resolute. Just as in John Constable's oil painting "Landscape with Lake and Greek Soldiers, " where nature clashes with man-made structures but fails to overpower them. Yet it is not only grand cities that face these ominous clouds; even remote places are subject to their wrath. In Vincent van Gogh's masterpiece "Storm near Montmartre, " he immortalized the intensity of such weather phenomena through his expressive brushstrokes. Traveling further afield brings me closer to another encounter with tempestuous conditions: Wales during 1799 was captured in a hand-coloured etching titled "An Artist Travelling in Wales. " Here too, dark clouds hang low over rugged landscapes, reminding us that no corner of our world is immune from their presence. The power of these brooding skies becomes evident when observing choppy waters off Foccia on Italy's coast or witnessing lightning bolts striking abandoned buildings near Val Marie in Saskatchewan, Canada. Such scenes evoke awe and respect for Mother Nature's might. Even amidst darkness though, there can be moments of hope and beauty.
