Vasco da Gama: The Portuguese Explorer Who Changed the World. In the 1400s, da Gama embarked on the first direct European sea route from Europe to India, navigating around Africa. His groundbreaking voyage opened new trade links between Europe and the East, leading to the establishment of Portuguese colonies and the rise of European powers in Asia. Sailors pleaded with da Gama to turn back during his perilous journey, but he pressed on, reaching Calicut in 1498. His success paved the way for Portuguese traders in India and Ceylon in the 1500s. Fast forward to the Congress of Vienna in 1815, where European powers gathered to redesign the political map of Europe. Amidst the grandeur of diplomacy, a bust stood proudly in the Estoi Palace gardens, a testament to his historic achievements.
