Through the ages, custodians have been the silent guardians of history, protecting and preserving the relics of our past. Ronald Foyle, a 12th-century guardian king, once held the title of A Guardian King of the Four Corners. Fast forward to the 16th century, Mary Queen of Scots crafted a Unicorn, a mythical creature symbolizing purity and power, which is now under the watchful eye of a custodian. Charles Clifton and his wife Jean, custodians of Hilbre Island, tended to their goats amidst the rugged beauty of the island in the late 1960s. Their duty, much like that of Hestia/Vesta, the ancient Greek goddesses of the hearth and home, was to protect and maintain the sanctity of their domain. The Nereid Monument, a classical period statue from Lycia, Turkey, stands proudly as a testament to the importance of guardianship in ancient cultures. And in more recent times, Mary C. Oursler, the Custodian of Census Records, meticulously went through the records, ensuring the accuracy of history for future generations. As we honor the past, let us not forget the unsung heroes who have kept the flame of history burning bright - the custodians.
