A Garden Guide - Extracting a Weed from a Lawn
Illustration by William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) showing a typically convoluted method of weeding a garden lawn. A man is hosted by ropes supported by a teepee configuration of poles worked by onlookers. He holds a corkscrew type instrument in his hand, in order to extract a single weed. Robinson was a regular contributor to the Sketch, the Bystander and other ILN titles during his lifetime. His weekly drawings featuring mind-boggling contraptions and designs were immensely popular. The Ice Hole Clam Spearer by Heath Robinson
An ingenious, though perhaps rather complicated device to catch clams through ice in the frozen north, part of a series of drawings in the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News entitled, Very Patent Aides to Sport. A piece of toast tempts an underwater clam, who, the moment it attempts to take a bite will have triggered a string, which sounds a bell which in turn alerts the hunter to cut another string and send a spear diving down to kill its prey. Date: 1928

Brain. Computer artwork of a human brain in a male wire-frame head. The brain is the nerve centre controlling bodily function and thought. It interprets nerve signals received from the rest of the body and initiates the appropriate responses. Most of the visible surface consists of the folds of the cerebral cortex, the region responsible for intelligent thought, language, conscious movement and memory. The cerebral cortex partially covers two structures at the rear base of the brain. The cerebellum (left of ear) controls balance, posture and muscular co-ordination. The rod-like brainstem (right of cerebellum) controls vital subconscious functions, including breathing and blood pressure
