Cheetahs are the fastest land animals in the world, capable of reaching speeds of up to 75 miles per hour, and are found mainly in Africa, but also inhabit parts of Iran and India. They have a slender body with long legs, a deep chest and a small head with black spots on their yellow-brown fur. They have powerful hind legs that help them accelerate quickly when chasing prey and can carnivores and feed mainly on antelopes, gazelles and hares. They hunt during the day by stalking their prey until they get close enough to chase it down. Cheetahs live alone or in small groups called coalitions, which consist of related males who work together to protect their territory from other cheetah coalitions or predators such as lions or hyenas. Unfortunately, cheetah populations have been declining due to habitat loss and illegal hunting for their fur. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these amazing animals so that future generations can continue to enjoy them in the wild.
