The cell body, also known as the soma or cytoplasmic mass, is the main part of a cell. It contains most of the organelles and other components that make up a cell. The cell body is responsible for many functions, including energy production, protein synthesis and waste removal. It also contains genetic material in the form of DNA and RNA. The shape and size of a they are vary greatly depending on its type. For example, nerve cells have long processes extending from their bodies while red blood cells are small and round with no visible nucleus or organelles. Cell bodies are surrounded by a membrane which helps to protect them from outside influences such as toxins or pathogens. Inside the membrane are various structures such as ribosomes which produce proteins needed for cellular function; mitochondria which generate energy; endoplasmic reticulum which transports materials around the cell; Golgi apparatus which packages molecules for transport; lysosomes which break down waste products; and vacuoles that store nutrients or water. All these components work together to keep a cell healthy and functioning properly so it can carry out its role in an organism's life cycle.
