Lord Mayor of London opening Whiteleys store

The Lord Mayor of London, Sir Thomas Boor Crosby (1830-1916), opening Whiteleys new premises in Bayswater, West London. At the time this was the biggest shop in the world, with a theatre and a golf course on the roof. The original Whiteleys department store was created by William Whiteley, who started a drapery shop at 31 Westbourne Grove in 1863. By 1890 over 6000 staff were employed. In 1989 Whiteleys reopened as a shopping centre

Washing up liquid (half a gallon for 5 shillings) and perfumed disinfectant are seen amongst other more edible products. Hamax manufactured in the South Yorkshire town of Mexborough for a number of years before passing from the Hamer family in 1991. It continued trading before finally closing in 1994

The business held twelve auctions in its first year and soon became successful. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) and Beau Brummel (1778-1840) were among the early patrons.
