Plague doctor, France, 18th century

Plague doctor. Artwork of the clothing used by doctors during plague outbreaks. This design, though in use much earlier, is from The Great Plague of Marseilles, France, in 1720. The plague (or Black Death) affected Europe from the 1340s to the 1700s. It is thought to have been bubonic plague, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, and spread by fleas on rats. This outbreak, one of the largest in Europe in the early 18th century, killed over 100, 000 people. The costume's beaked bronze mask contained aromatic herbs. This reduced the smell for the doctor and the limited airflow through holes in the beak reduced exposure to "bad air". Gloves and a heavily oiled undergarment and cloak were also designed to reduce exposure. 19th century artwork by Daumier, published in Devils, Drugs and Doctors (London, 1929)

So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel, 1841. Creator: Peter Lightfoot

So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel, 1841. Biblical scene, from 2 Samuel 24: 15: So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men. The plague of the Philistines at Ashdod: the dead and dying lying in the streets after God sent a plague which killed 70,000. The woman in the centre has blood or pus seeping from her armpit. Buboes - painful swellings in the thighs, neck, groin or armpits - are a symptom of bubonic plague. Engraving after a 17th century work by Pierre Mignard

Filling a mass grave at night during the Plague of London, c1665

Filling a mass grave at night during the Plague of London, c 1665. Showing a group of men with torches in a churchyard, preparing to empty the contents of a covered cart into an open grave. The Plague, also known as the Black Death, was a disease caused by Yersinia Pestis, an infection carried by fleas living as parasites on rats. The Plague hit London in late 1664, having ravaged Holland the previous year, and killed around 100, 000 people in and around the city. The dead were collected at night and thrown into common burial graves. (Colorised black and white print)
