London and the Thames, 18th century

London and the Thames, 18th century. This view looks westwards through London, over sailing ships on the River Thames. Prominent landmarks include St Paul's Cathedral (centre), Westminster Abbey (upper left), the Monument to the Great Fire of London (centre right) and the Tower of London (lower right). This artwork was produced circa 1760 by the printing company Bowles and Carver. An earlier artwork of 1751 by Thomas Bowles shows houses on Old London Bridge (foreground), not present in this artwork. These houses were removed in the period 17581762. The other two bridges, since replaced by modern bridges, are: Putney Bridge (opened 1729) and Westminster Bridge (opened 1740)

Demonstration of the wireless telephone Featured Print

Demonstration of the wireless telephone

Demonstration of the wireless telephone, June 1920. In the 1920s, broadcasting was still in its infancy, with radio transmitters and receivers owned only by amateur enthusiasts. To demonstrate the potential and efficiency of the wireless telephone as a means of broadcasting, Dame Nellie Melba, the Australian soprano shown here, gave a concert of operatic arias that was transmitted across Europe from Essex, England. People gathered at receiving stations were impressed by the clarity of tone. This portrait is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from the 1890s to the 1930s

Hugh Owen Thomas, Welsh surgeon Featured Print

Hugh Owen Thomas, Welsh surgeon

Hugh Owen Thomas (1834-1891), Welsh surgeon. Thomas is known as the father of orthopaedic surgery. He came from a family of renowned bone-setters, but was the first to receive formal medical training, becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1857. He practiced in Liverpool, specialising in orthopaedic surgery. He developed a number of orthopaedic devices, including the Thomas splint, a type of traction splint that stabilised femur (thigh bone) fractures and prevented infection. The use of the splint by Thomas's nephew during World War I reduced the mortality rate for femur fractures from 80 per cent to 8 per cent
