Bill Brunell was a talented artist who captured the essence of vintage car racing in his stunning illustrations. In 1937, he depicted the thrilling moment when WP Uglow's 1937 HRG 2-seater sports car participated in the NWLMC Lawrence Cup Trial. The power and elegance of this vehicle were beautifully portrayed by Brunell's skilled hand. Another masterpiece by Brunell showcased AR Rye's Riley Lynx competing in the MCC Lands End Trial of 1935. The artist perfectly captured the intensity and determination on Rye's face as he maneuvered through challenging terrains, showcasing both the driver's skill and the car's capabilities. In one of his works, Brunell highlighted HS Yelland's 490 cc DKW during its participation in the MCC Torquay Rally of 1938. The vibrant colors and attention to detail brought this powerful machine to life on canvas. Brunell also immortalized a Bugatti Type 35 at the Bugatti Owners Club Hill Climb in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire, back in 1935. This artwork exuded speed and excitement as it depicted a thrilling race against time up a steep hill. HS Perry's triumphant journey with his trusty sidecar-equipped Triumph during E&DMC Scottish Six Days Trial found its way into one of Brunell’s creations from 1933. The dedication and perseverance shown by Perry were evident through every brushstroke. The artist took us back to Bournemouth Rally in 1928 with an illustration capturing cars speeding along Undercliff Drive. It was clear that Bill Brunell had an eye for not only capturing vehicles but also their surroundings, bringing them together harmoniously on paper. One cannot overlook H Whitfield-Semmence’s Semmence Special at Bugatti Owners Club Lewes Speed Trials in Sussex during 1937—an event that caught Bill Brunell’s artistic eye due to its uniqueness and elegance.
