Bertrand Du Guesclin, a renowned figure in French history, was an exceptional knight and military strategist. His valor and loyalty to his country earned him the prestigious title of Constable of France. In an engraving depicting Charles V of France offering Bertrand Duguesclin the sword of Constable of France, we witness the recognition bestowed upon this remarkable warrior. The scene is reminiscent of a tournament in the fourteenth century, captured beautifully in Eugene Delacroix's painting from 1812. The vivid colors bring to life the bravery and chivalry displayed by Duguesclin on numerous battlefields. Duguesclin's sister also played a significant role in his life, as depicted by Delacroix in his 1829 artwork. This portrayal showcases their strong bond and highlights her unwavering support for her brother's endeavors. Another engraving shows Charles V presenting Duguesclin with the epee of High Constable during a momentous event that took place in 1370. This symbolic gesture solidified Duguesclin's position as one of France's greatest military figures. Tragically, all great stories must come to an end. Barbant captures the somber moment when Bertrand du Guesclin breathes his last breaths on his deathbed in 1898. Gilbert also immortalizes this Breton knight through artistry that evokes both admiration and melancholy. In another piece from 1894, we catch a glimpse into du Guesclin's personal life through an image featuring his beloved sister once again. Their relationship serves as a reminder that even heroes have loved ones who stand beside them throughout their journey. A nineteenth-century depiction showcases various scenes from du Gueslin’s extraordinary life – battles fought valiantly against formidable foes and victories achieved against all odds – reminding us why he remains etched within history books.
