Kandy - Sri Lanka - Buddhist Procession Featured Print

Kandy - Sri Lanka - Buddhist Procession

Kandy is very popular due to the annual Buddhist pageant known as the Esala Perahera, in which one of the inner caskets used for covering the tooth relic of Buddha is taken in a grand procession through the streets of the city. This casket is taken on a royal tusker. The procession includes traditional dancers and drummers, flag bearers of the provinces of the old Kandyan kingdom, the Nilames (lay custodians of temples ) wearing their traditional dresses, torch bearers and also the grandly attired elephants. This ceremony which is annually held in the months of July or August, attracts large crowds from all parts of the country and also many foreign tourists.

Thanet VAD Motor Transport Group

Thanet VAD Motor Transport Group and stretcher bearers outside The Yarrow Home for Convalescent Children (date - journal). Sir Alfred Yarrow opened this home in 1894. In late 1914 the Committee of Management offered the Home to the military authorities as a military hospital, entirely staffed and paid for. This arrangement continued until c. August 1916 when the hospital was taken over by the Canadian military medical authorities. Major Powell-Cotton was the Area VAD Transport Officer in Thanet, responsible for the transport of patients from their arrival on ambulance trains at local stations to the nine VAD hospitals in the area. Between 1914 and 1916 he was assisted in this by the Yarrow Stretcher Bearers. This commemorative photograph was taken at the time the Yarrow authorities stopped running the hospital in August 1916. The photograph was taken in front of the main building. Today (2014) this building is part of East Kent College, Broadstairs. The men in the photograph are wearing 'YH' armbands. Major Powell-Cotton's ambulance 'Q2' is on the left. He converted his Renault car into this ambulane in September 1914. He is sitting on the left hand side of the front seat. Date: 1916
