Bay Laurel, or Laurus nobilis, is a beloved evergreen plant with a rich history in culinary and medicinal uses. This majestic tree, depicted in an 1833-39 coloured engraving, graces a culinary window box alongside parsley, chives, sage, and rosemary. The sweet bay tree, with its glossy leaves and distinctive fragrance, has been a staple in Mediterranean cooking for centuries. Giovanni Antonio Bottione's 1770-1781 watercolor painting captures the beauty of the bay tree in all its glory. Its leaves, reminiscent of the shape of laurel wreaths, are a symbol of victory and honor. As the seasons change, the bay tree adapts. In June, it blooms with white flowers, attracting birds such as the song thrush and blackcap to its berries. Yet, even in March, when frost damages its leaves, the tree perseveres. The bay tree's pollen, as seen under the microscope, is a testament to its resilience and vitality. This humble plant continues to provide nourishment, not just for us, but for the creatures that call the garden home. Bay Laurel, a true testament to nature's beauty and endurance.
