Bare-knuckle boxing, a historic and raw form of pugilism, dates back to the late 18th century. Depicted in engravings like Daniel Mendoza's portrait by Henry Kinsbury (1789) and Richard Humphreys' by J. Young (c. 1788), these early champions showcased their grit and determination in the ring. The oil paintings of a boxer from around 1800 and Portrait of Richard Humphreys (c. 1800) further capture the intensity and brutality of the bare-knuckle era. As time passed, the tradition continued with figures like Frank Klause (c. 1910-15) and James Figg, the first English bare-knuckle boxing champion who passed away in 1734. George A. Hayes, an American artist, immortalized the essence of bare-knuckle boxing in his works, keeping the legacy alive for future generations.
