Asteroid Apophis and the Moon, artwork

Asteroid Apophis and the Moon. Artwork of the near-Earth asteroid Apophis passing the Moon as it approaches the Earth. When discovered, initial calculations showed that there was a chance that the asteroid would strike Earth at its close approach on 13 April 2029. Subsequent studies have shown that it will miss Earth by around 36, 000 kilometres, the distance at which geostationary satellites orbit. This approach may deflect it enough for it to collide with Earth on its 2036 approach. Apophis is 250 metres wide, too small to wipe out life on Earth, but it would devastate a wide area with an energy release 65, 000 times that of the Hiroshima atom bomb

Milky Way-Andromeda galactic collision

Milky Way-Andromeda galactic collision. Artwork showing the future collision between the Milky Way Galaxy (seen edge-on) and the Andromeda Galaxy (seen as a spiral). This collision, which takes place slowly over millions of years, is seen above a landscape of mountains and water. This is the start of the collision, some 4 billion years from the present time. Andromeda's spiral arms have swung out of its galactic plane and are also being tidally stretched. Earth's solar system is being flung out along one of the Milky Way's tidally stretched spiral arms. For the aftermath of this collision, see C014/4726

Spiral galaxy NGC 1365, HAWK-I image

Spiral galaxy NGC 1365, infrared image. This barred spiral galaxy is part of the Fornax cluster of galaxies, and lies about 60 million light years from Earth in the constellation of Fornax. It is around 200, 000 light years across, and contains hundreds of billions of stars. It is thought to very similar in size and appearance to our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Viewed in the infrared, detail normally obscured by dust in the spiral arms (upper right and lower left) can be seen. This image was obtained with the HAWK-I (High Acuity Wide field K-band Imager)infrared camera on ESO's Very Large Telescope, at the Paranal Observatory in Chile
