Arctiidae, commonly known as the Woolly Bear caterpillar, is a fascinating creature that can be found feeding on grasses by night. This particular species belongs to the Tri-coloured Tiger Moth family and is native to Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. In the world of Butterflies and Moths, Arctiidae holds a special place. Its unique characteristics are beautifully depicted in Plates 11 and 10 of Curtis British Entomology's collection on Bombyces, Arctiadae, among others. These illustrations showcase the intricate patterns and vibrant colors that make these moths so captivating. One notable member of this family is the Jersey tiger moth (Euplagia quadripunctaria) and can be seen resting in large numbers on Sweetgum trees or trunks across various regions. While its usual appearance boasts striking black markings on an orange background, it occasionally surprises with a less common yellow color variation. Another stunning member is the Garden tiger moth (Arctica caja), which graces Killard Point NNR in Ballyhornan, County Down, Northern Ireland. The close-up view reveals mesmerizing patterns adorning its wings during July's warm days. Venturing further into North America brings us to Quebec's Lac-Drolet province where we find the Great tiger moth (Arctia caja americana). This majestic creature showcases its beauty against a November backdrop with its distinct markings and fluffy appearance. Not all members conform to traditional expectations; some display remarkable adaptations. The Clearwing moth (Cosmosoma teuthras) stands out as it poses for photographs against a white background within a mobile field studio—a true testament to nature's diversity. Lastly, we encounter the Nine-spotted moth (Amata phegea) gracefully sipping nectar from a Mountain arnica flower (Arnica montana).
