Aptenodytes patagonica, commonly known as the Emperor Penguin, is a species of penguin found in Antarctica, and is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species and can grow up to 1.1m tall and weigh up to 40kg, and are well adapted for life in the cold Antarctic climate with their thick layer of feathers and insulating fat layers that help them retain body heat. Emperor Penguins feed mainly on krill, squid, fish and other crustaceans which they catch while swimming underwater. They breed during the Antarctic winter when temperatures can drop as low as -50°C. Breeding pairs form monogamous relationships which last until one partner dies or they separate due to environmental changes. Emperor Penguins are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN due to threats such as climate change, overfishing and oil spills which have caused population declines in some areas.
