Angora, a city located in Ankara, Turkey, is renowned for its rich history and association with the luxurious angora wool. This fine fiber is derived from the fur of rabbits and hares that are bred specifically for their soft and silky coats. One cannot discuss Angora without mentioning its connection to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey. Ataturk was not only a visionary leader but also a lover of animals. He recognized the potential of Angora's angora rabbits and hares as a valuable resource for his country's economy. In 1908, when fashion trends favored animal pelts, various creatures found themselves in high demand by the industry. Among them were American wolves, brown bears, skunks, Canadian wolves, coyotes, grey squirrels, common squirrels, phalangers (also known as possums), lemurs, Indian wild cats - all sought after for their exquisite furs. Interestingly enough though unrelated to fashion or textiles directly; goats exhibited at Alexandra Palace Goat Show became part of this narrative too. Their presence added diversity to this already fascinating tale surrounding Angora. The allure extended beyond just clothing materials. Engravings depicting picturesque maps showcasing war zones in Danubian Provinces and other regions like Asia Minor further highlight how versatile this city truly was. Furthermore; ancient Roman traditions showcased unique practices such as "the blessing of animals. " These rituals involved people from all walks of life coming together to honor different species – including those whose pelts were highly valued by the fashion industry. Lastly; Bajazet I litho adds another layer to our understanding of Angora's historical significance. It serves as a reminder that even centuries ago during Ottoman times when Bajazet I ruled over Anatolia region which included present-day Ankara province where Angora lies today - there existed connections between rulership & nature appreciation within this region.
