The Anglo-Egyptian War was a conflict fought between the United Kingdom and Egypt from 1882 to 1885. The war began after the British invasion of Egypt in 1882, which was part of a larger effort to protect British interests in the region. The British sought to maintain control of the Suez Canal, which was a vital route for trade and communication between Britain and its colonies in India and East Africa. The war began when the British forces, led by General Garnet Wolseley, invaded Egypt in 1882. The British forces quickly captured Cairo and Alexandria, and then moved south to the city of Tel el-Kebir. The Egyptians, led by Ahmed Arabi, put up a strong resistance, but were eventually defeated by the British in the Battle of Tel el-Kebir. The British then established a protectorate over Egypt, which lasted until 1922. During this period, the British maintained control of the Suez Canal and the Egyptian government was largely under British control. The British also imposed a number of economic and political reforms, including the abolition of slavery and the introduction of a new taxation system. The Anglo-Egyptian War had a significant impact on the region. It led to the emergence of a strong nationalist movement in Egypt, which eventually led to the overthrow of the British-backed monarchy in 1952. The war also had a major impact on the British Empire, as it marked the beginning of the end of Britain's imperial power in the region.
