EDITORS COMMENTS

Angelico Fra Guido di Pietro, also known as Fra Angelico, was a renowned Italian painter of the early Renaissance period. Born in 1387 and passing away in 1455, his artistic legacy continues to captivate audiences worldwide. One of his notable works is "The Annunciation, " created around 1445. In this masterpiece, we witness the divine moment when the angel Gabriel appears before the Virgin Mary to announce her role as the mother of Jesus Christ. The background depicts Adam and Eve being expelled from Paradise, symbolizing humanity's fall from grace. Another remarkable piece by Fra Angelico is a triptych dating back to the 14th century. This artwork showcases three significant biblical events: Ascension, Last Judgment, and Pentecost. Painted with tempera on board, it exudes an ethereal quality that transports viewers into sacred realms. In his fresco titled "Head of Christ, " created during the mid-15th century, Fra Angelico skillfully captures Christ's serene countenance with delicate brushstrokes. The painting radiates spiritual tranquility while inviting contemplation upon His divinity. Fra Angelico's talent extends beyond religious themes; he also depicted scenes from martyrdoms such as "St Stephen being led to His Martyrdom. " Through vivid colors and meticulous attention to detail, he conveys both human suffering and divine triumph over adversity. "The mocking of Christ with Mary and St Dominic" is another striking fresco by Fra Angelico. Created between 1438-1446, it portrays the cruel mockery endured by Jesus before His crucifixion. This powerful composition evokes empathy for Christ's sacrifice while highlighting Mary's unwavering devotion alongside St Dominic’s presence. Among his many Madonna paintings stands out "Madonna with Child, Angels and Saints, " part of the Guidalotti Polyptych completed circa 1447 using tempera & oil on board.
