The American continent, a land of discovery and conquest, holds a dark history that cannot be forgotten. Christopher Columbus, the renowned maritime explorer who discovered America in 1492, paved the way for European colonization. However, behind this tale lies a series of horrific crimes inflicted on indigenous peoples by Spanish settlers. Engravings by Theodore de Bry depict the gruesome reality faced by Native Americans at the hands of Spanish conquistadors. Massacres were rampant as innocent Indian women and children fell victim to their merciless attacks. The sight of hangings became all too common as conquerors sought to instill fear among the native population. Spanish Conquistadors showed no mercy when it came to subjugating Indians; they forced them into labor and mistreated them without remorse. Anthropophages Indians suffered greatly under their rule, enduring unimaginable hardships. One engraving shows an entire Indian village set ablaze by these ruthless invaders while another depicts amputations being carried out on helpless natives. Such scenes serve as haunting reminders of the atrocities committed during this era. Yet amidst this darkness emerges tales of exploration and adventure across the vast American continent. The Express Quick Trip from New York to San Francisco showcases how pioneers braved unknown territories in search of new opportunities. Not all Europeans brought destruction upon Native Americans; Amerigo Vespucci stands as an example. This Italian explorer and cartographer lent his name to our beloved continent - America - forever immortalizing his contributions to its discovery. As we reflect upon the history etched within these engravings and stories, let us remember both triumphs and tragedies that have shaped the American continent into what it is today – a diverse tapestry woven with threads from countless cultures and histories intertwined for eternity.
