Male dummy showing acupuncture meridians & points

Acupuncture dummy. Front view of a male acupuncture dummy showing meridians and acupuncture points. There are twelve main meridians (coloured lines) connected to each other on a continuous circuit around the body. On each meridian are acupuncture points (coloured dots). Acupuncture was developed in China on the theory that Qi (life force) flows along the meridians (channels). Each of the meridians also connects through internal pathways with one of the internal organs. Diseases are considered to be due to interrupted Qi along the meridians. Insertion and twirling of needles at the acupuncture points is believed to restore normal flow

View of several acupuncture needles

Acupuncture needles. View of several needles used in acupuncture. Acupuncture has been used in Eastern medicine for thousands of years. It involves inserting needles into parts of the body along energy lines known as meridians. It is used to treat a variety of conditions including rheumatic and arthritic pain, allergies, digestion disorders, insomnia and stress. Tense muscles can be relaxed by insertions. It is thought that the needles stimulate the body to produce endorphins, which act as the body's natural painkillers. Acupuncture can also be used for the treatment of addictions. Usually symptoms start to be relieved after around four sessions

Animal magnetism, satirical artwork Featured Image

Animal magnetism, satirical artwork

Animal magnetism. Satirical artwork depicting a patient and animal magnetism practitioner with animal heads. Animal magnetism was developed by the German physician Franz Mesmer (1734-1815) in the 1770s. It involved manipulating a magnetic fluid thought to reside in living objects. The practice was later renamed mesmerism, and eventually led to the development of hypnosis. At lower left is a German copy of Ovid's Metamorphoses'. This 19th century artwork is from Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932)
