Alexander (1718-1793) was a renowned Swedish portrait painter who captured the essence and beauty of his subjects through his masterful brushstrokes. His talent for portraiture is evident in works such as "Portrait of Princess Maria Josepha of Saxony" (1776), where he skillfully portrays her regal grace and elegance. In 1783, Alexander created another captivating piece, "Portrait of Anne Vallayer-Coster, " showcasing the artist's ability to capture not only physical likeness but also the inner spirit of his subject. The painting exudes a sense of serenity and intelligence, reflecting Vallayer-Coster's artistic prowess. One cannot overlook Alexander's early masterpiece, "Portrait of Thure Leonard Klinckowstrom" (1758). This striking portrayal showcases both the subject's strength and vulnerability, revealing Alexander's keen eye for capturing human emotions. Throughout his career, Alexander painted numerous notable figures from various walks of life. In "Portrait of Mademoiselle de Fontenay" (1784), he captures her enigmatic charm with delicate precision. Similarly, in "Louis-Jean-Marie Daubenton" (ca 1792), we witness an intimate depiction that reveals Daubenton's intellectual depth. Not limited to portraying others, Alexander also turned his gaze inward with his self-portrait in 1785. This introspective work allows us to glimpse into the artist's soul and appreciate his mastery even further. Among other prominent individuals immortalized by Alexander are Claude-Joseph Vernet in 1767, Louis Philippe I in circa 1770, Marie Suzanne (the Artist’s Wife) in 1763 – each painting serving as a testament to Roslin’s ability to capture their unique personalities on canvas. Royalty too found themselves under Roslin’s brush.
