Agia Sophia, also known as Hagia Sophia, is a stunning architectural marvel located in Istanbul, Turkey. This historic building has stood the test of time and served various purposes throughout its existence. Originally built as a Christian cathedral in 537 AD by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, Agia Sophia was considered the largest and most impressive church in the world for nearly a thousand years. Its massive dome and intricate mosaics are still awe-inspiring to this day. In 1453, following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, Agia Sophia was converted into a mosque by Sultan Mehmed II. The interior was adorned with Islamic calligraphy and beautiful carpets were laid on the floor. In 1935, under Atatürk's orders, Agia Sophia was transformed into a museum as part of his efforts to secularize Turkey. It remained so until July 2020 when it was reconverted back into a mosque by President Erdogan's decree. Regardless of its current status or religious affiliation, Agia Sophia remains an iconic symbol of Istanbul's rich history and cultural heritage. Visitors from around the world flock to admire its beauty and learn about its fascinating past.
