Adriaan de Lelie, a renowned Dutch portrait painter of the 18th and early 19th centuries, captured the essence of his subjects with remarkable skill and precision. His works include portraits of prominent figures such as Hendrick de Hartog, an examiner for the VOC (Dutch East India Company), Albertus Henricus Wiese and Pieter Gerardus van Overstraten, both Governors-General. De Lelie also painted Jan Nieuwenhuyzen, a Baptist minister who founded the Felix Meritis Society in 1784. This society played a significant role in promoting arts and sciences during that time. Another notable subject was Cornelis Sebille Roos, an Amsterdam art dealer known for his discerning eye in selecting masterpieces. Among De Lelie's captivating portraits is one depicting Gerrit Verdooren, a Vice Admiral whose distinguished career left an indelible mark on Dutch naval history. Additionally, he portrayed General Daendels bidding farewell to Lieutenant-Colonel Krayenhoff before embarking on important military endeavors. Not limited to capturing influential individuals alone, De Lelie also depicted Barend Klijn Barendsz - a poet whose words resonated with many during his time. In addition to portraiture, De Lelie ventured into genre painting as well. One example is "Morning Visit, " which portrays an old man seated in a kitchen setting – offering viewers glimpses into everyday life during that era. The Drawing Gallery of the Felix Meritis Society holds another masterpiece by De Lelie titled "The Drawing Gallery of the Felix Meritis Society.
