Abner: A Tale of Courage, Betrayal, and Legacy In the realm of biblical stories, Abner's name echoes through time as a figure entangled in tales of bravery and deceit. From the vivid strokes of Rembrandt to the intricate etchings by Augustin Hirschvogel, Abner's presence is immortalized across various artistic mediums. One such portrayal captures David with the Head of Goliath before Saul. Painted in 1627 by an unknown artist, this oil on wood masterpiece showcases Abner standing beside King Saul. As Saul asks Abner who David is in a color lithograph rendition, one can sense curiosity mingled with suspicion lingering in the air. Fast forward centuries later to early 1862 when Union Brigadier General Abner Doubleday graces us with his stoic presence through a black and white photograph. His stern countenance reflects determination amidst turbulent times during the American Civil War. But it isn't just military exploits that define our enigmatic protagonist. Bret Harte's lithograph titled "The Landlord of the Big Flume Hotel" introduces us to another facet of Abner's life - that of a landlord overseeing bustling establishments belonging to Dr Stafford Springs in 1810. Yet amidst these moments of triumph and prosperity lies tragedy too. In an engraving depicting Asahel slain by Abner from 2 Samuel II verse 23, we witness how even heroes are not immune to sorrowful acts committed under duress or necessity. Returning once again to Hirschvogel's artistry, his etching portrays Joab betraying Abner - a treacherous act that forever stains their relationship. The border surrounding them depicts Joab stabbing Abner; an image laden with symbolism representing fractured loyalties and broken alliances. As we delve deeper into history, another glimpse emerges - ABNER DOUBLEDAY (1819-1893), an American army officer whose legacy extends beyond the battlefield.
