Abgarus of Edessa, also known as the Holy Face, has been depicted in various artworks throughout history. One such portrayal is seen in The Veil of Saint Veronica, created by an anonymous artist in the early 16th century. This artwork showcases the moment when Saint Veronica offered her veil to Jesus, and his face miraculously imprinted on it. Another notable depiction of Abgarus can be found in The Flemalle Panels: Saint Veronica by Robert Campin. Painted around the late 14th century, this piece captures the compassion and devotion of Saint Veronica as she presents the Holy Face to us. The renowned painter El Greco also portrayed Abgarus in two different works - one being a Triptych of The Holy Face and another titled Holy Mandylion (The Vernicle). In both paintings, El Greco's unique style brings out a sense of spirituality and reverence towards Abgarus' holy countenance. Derick Baegert's painting titled Saint Veronica and a Group of Knights depicts not only Abgarus but also highlights the significance he holds among knights who gather around him with awe and admiration. Moving forward through time, we encounter more depictions like The Holy Mandylion (The Vernicle) from Byzantine iconography dating back to the 13th century. This ancient artwork showcases how deeply rooted Abgarus' image was within religious traditions. In later centuries, artists continued to portray Abgarus with great skill and devotion. A dome painting in the Archangel Michael Cathedral of Moscow Kremlin displays The Holy Face with intricate details that reflect Ancient Russian frescos from 1652-1666. Aelbrecht Bouts' work called The Holy Countenance from around 1500 shows influence from earlier depictions while adding its own artistic flair within a circular composition that emphasizes divine radiance emanating from Abgarus' face. Russian icons have also played a significant role in preserving the image of Abgarus.
