Sir John Lubbock, also known as the 1st Baron Avebury, was a prominent English politician and an influential figure in various fields. This collection of images showcases his diverse interests and accomplishments. In a color lithograph, we see Sir John Lubbock portrayed as an English politician with his notable achievements highlighted. A Punch cartoon engraving depicts him as a banker, scientist, philanthropist, and Liberal politician. A black-and-white photograph captures his dignified presence while another image from 1901 humorously reveals that Lord Avebury had taken up golf. The portraits from different periods showcase his evolution over time: one by John Collier in 1875-1913 portrays him with confidence; another by Lock & Whitfield in 1877 shows him as Vice-Chancellor of the University of London; Edward Linley Sambourne's artwork from 1882 emphasizes his multifaceted nature. However, Sir John Lubbock's interests extended beyond politics and academia. His passion for archaeology is evident through depictions of Stone Age tumuli containing two chambers found in Rodding, Denmark in 1913 and a copy of a Palaeolithic cave painting at Altamira, northern Spain also from that year featuring bison.
