The years 1914 to 1918 were a period of great upheaval and conflict in Europe, as the First World War raged on. The war began in July 1914 when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, and soon after Germany, Russia, France and Britain joined the fray. Over four years of fighting ensued, with millions of soldiers from all sides dying in battles such as Verdun and the Somme. In 1917 the United States entered the war on the side of Britain and France. Finally, in November 1918 an armistice was signed between Germany and Allied forces that brought an end to hostilities. The Treaty of Versailles was then signed in 1919 which officially ended WWI but also set up conditions for future conflicts that would lead to WWII just two decades later.
