1595-1596: A Year of Reflection and Repentance as Depicted by Hugo de Groot and Michael Colyn Amidst the bustling Dutch artistic scene, two masterful artists, Hugo de Groot and Michael Colyn, created a series of poignant works that explored the theme of repentance. These pieces, attributed to Zacharias Dolendo after Jacques de Gheyn II, feature various biblical figures and a king, all in moments of deep contrition. First, we have the Good Thief, a killer turned penitent, who, with a heartfelt remorse, reaches out to Christ on the cross. Next, Paul, the apostle, is shown with tears in his eyes, seeking forgiveness for his past transgressions. Peter, too, is depicted as a repentant sinner, bowing his head in shame and regret. Zacchaeus, the tax collector, is also portrayed as a penitent, climbing the sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus and seek redemption. Maria Magdalena als berouwvolle zondaar (Mary Magdalene as the Penitent Sinner) is another powerful image, with the woman in deep contemplation, her eyes closed, and her hair covering her face in shame. David as a penitent is shown with a broken heart, as he acknowledges his wrongdoings and seeks forgiveness from God. The series concludes with The King as the Strongest in the World, a powerful monarch, who, despite his might, is subject to the same human frailties and the need for repentance. Meanwhile, in a different vein, Jacob de Gheyn II created a print of a woman dressed festively, accompanied by a man in a cape and a masked man, one of whom holds a cock on his belt. The meaning behind this image remains a mystery, but it serves as a stark contrast to the introspective and somber works of de Groot and Colyn.
