Anglo-Saxon 10th century world map

Anglo-Saxon world map, dating from the 10th century. East is top. This map of the known world was probably produced by an Irish monk. Considering the state of European learning at the time, it is an impressive geographical achievement. However, in terms of accuracy it is outclassed by maps dating from the Classical era. Important landmarks, such as Jerusalem and Rome, are marked. The original is part of the Cotton Library, held in the British Library. Taken from A Book of Discovery (1912) by M.B. Synge

Depiction of a scene from early British history: Queen Elgiva and King Eadwig are reproved by priests, possibly Archbishop Odo and/or Saint Dunstan, on the day of Eadwig's consecration as king. Edwy All-Fair or Eadwig (c941-959 AD) was the King of England from 955 until his death. He was married briefly to Aelfgifu or Elgiva (ruled 955-959). Engraving after a work of the late 18th century. Hrotsvit of Gandersheim presents an aged emperor Otto the Great with her Gesta Oddonis, under the eyes of Abbess Gerberga. After a 1501 woodcut by Albrecht Durer. Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim, c. 935 - after 973. 10th-century German secular canoness, dramatist and poetess who lived at Gandersheim Abbey.
