The main building, designed by renowned sculptor Alfred Gilbert, was constructed between 1848 and 1849. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, workhouses like this one served as institutions for the poor and destitute, providing shelter, food, and basic care in exchange for hard labor. In its early years, the Fulham Workhouse was a crucial component of the English Poor Law system, which aimed to provide relief to the impoverished population while also encouraging self-sufficiency.
