Front cover of the Furness Railway timetable, 1915
Illustrated front cover of a timetable produced for the Furness Railway Company in October 1915, showing a young woman sitting at an easel, painting a view of Lake Windermere in the Lake District. The Furness Railway Company was an independent railway in operation between 1846 and 1923. Originally conceived as a mineral railway, it later played a major role in the development of the town of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, and in the growth of the Lake District tourist industry.
