Friedrich III, also known as Friedrich der Weise or the Wise Elector of Saxony, is depicted in this historic print, dated back to 1525. The Elector, born on January 28, 1463, ruled the Electorate of Saxony from 1486 until his death in 1525. He is shown here in regal attire, holding a sword in his right hand as a symbol of his power and authority. The red and white ermine robes signify his noble status and the electorate's connection to the Holy Roman Empire. Friedrich der Weise was a significant patron of the arts, particularly of the renowned German artists Albrecht Dürer and Lucas Cranach the Elder. Dürer's famous woodcut portrait of the elector, created in 1520, is considered one of the most accurate representations of Friedrich's appearance. This print, however, is believed to be an interpretation by an unknown artist, possibly inspired by Cranach's works. The elector's support for the arts and education contributed significantly to the cultural development of Saxony during his reign. He founded the University of Wittenberg in 1502, which became a center for the Protestant Reformation under Martin Luther. Friedrich's patronage extended beyond the arts and education, as he also supported the construction of fortifications and the expansion of his territory.
