In May 1849, French forces, led by General Oudinot, entered Rome to support the Roman Republic against the combined forces of the Pope and the Austrians. The French were successful, and on July 3, 1849, they marched into the city and took control of the Piazza del Popolo. This victory marked the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the French occupation of Rome.
