EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the French submarine Turquoise, a formidable naval vessel of the early 20th century, following its unexpected transformation during the First World War. In late 1915, the Turquoise, a French-built submarine, was captured by the Ottoman forces in the Mediterranean Sea. The Ottoman Empire, allied with the Central Powers, seized the opportunity to rename the submarine Mustacip Onbasi and commission it for operations in the Black Sea. Mustacip Onbasi, an Arabic name meaning "Commander Mustafa," was a nod to the Ottoman military leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who would later become the founder and first President of the modern Republic of Turkey. The renaming ceremony marked a significant moment in the history of naval warfare, as the Ottoman forces successfully integrated a captured enemy submarine into their own fleet. The Turquoise, now Mustacip Onbasi, was put to use in the Black Sea, where it played a role in the Ottoman naval operations against the Russian forces. The photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the interplay of war, diplomacy, and naval strategy during the Great War. The image, with its rich historical context, is a testament to the adaptability and resilience of military forces in times of conflict.
