EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image transports us back to the turbulent 14th century, during the tumultuous 100 Years War between France and England. The two French soldiers depicted, a Vougier and a Crenequinier, stand ready for battle, their determined expressions reflecting the intense conflict that raged across Europe during this period. The Vougier, armed with a vouge, a type of polearm, is dressed in a full suit of plate armor. His helmet, adorned with a visor and crest, protects his head and face. The vouge, a versatile weapon, could be used for both thrusting and hacking attacks, making it an effective tool in close combat. The Crenequinier, on the other hand, is equipped with a crossbow, a powerful and accurate weapon of the time. Crossbows were particularly effective in battle due to their long range and ability to penetrate armor. The Crenequinier wears a gambeson, a quilted jacket, under his armor, providing additional protection. The 100 Years War, which lasted from 1337 to 1453, was a series of conflicts between the House of Plantagenet, ruling England, and the House of Valois, ruling France. This period was marked by numerous battles, sieges, and skirmishes, as each side sought to assert their dominance over the other. The use of various weapons, such as the vouge and crossbow, was crucial in determining the outcome of these battles. This photograph, taken from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the military tactics and equipment used during the 100 Years War. It serves as a reminder of the rich history and complexities of this period, and the importance of understanding the role that armed conflicts have played in shaping the world we live in today.
