French Officers on Crete
French Officers on Crete. Although much of modern Greece had been independent since the 1820s, Crete remained in Ottoman hands. A Greek force arrived to annex the island in 1897 and the Great Powers acted, occupying the island and dividing it into British, French, Russian and Italian areas of control. In 1898, Turkish troops were ejected and a national government was set up, still nominally under Ottoman suzerainty. Prince George, was made High Commissioner, and a joint Muslim-Christian assembly was part-elected, part-appointed

EDITORS COMMENTS
French Officers on Crete, 1898: A Moment of Peace Amidst Historical Unrest This evocative photograph captures a moment of calm amidst the tumultuous history of Crete in 1898. The image shows a group of French officers, dressed in their military uniforms, gathered around a table in a serene setting. The room is adorned with ornate decorations, and the officers appear deep in conversation, their expressions thoughtful and focused. The backdrop to this scene is one of great historical significance. Although much of modern Greece had gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire by the 1820s, Crete remained under Ottoman control. In 1897, a Greek force arrived to annex the island, leading to a violent uprising and the intervention of the Great Powers. The island was then divided into British, French, Russian, and Italian areas of control. In 1898, Turkish troops were ejected, and a national government was established, still nominally under Ottoman suzerainty. Prince George of Greece was appointed as High Commissioner, and a joint Muslim-Christian assembly was part-elected, part-appointed to govern the island. Despite the complex political situation, this photograph conveys a sense of peace and order. The French officers, as peacekeepers, played a crucial role in maintaining stability on the island during this transitional period. Their presence allowed for the establishment of a new government and the eventual integration of Crete into the Greek state in 1913. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the intricate historical dynamics that shaped the modern Greek state and the role of international intervention in shaping its borders. It also serves as a testament to the importance of peacekeeping efforts in times of conflict and uncertainty.
