EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures a pivotal moment in the relationship between France and Ethiopia, as the French mission, led by Lieutenant Marchand, enters the capital city of Addis Ababa on March 1, 1899. The mission's arrival marked the beginning of France's formal involvement in Ethiopian affairs, which would ultimately lead to the Italo-Ethiopian War and the Italian occupation of Ethiopia from 1936 to 1941. Lieutenant Marchand, a French military officer, had been sent by the French government to negotiate a treaty with Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia. The treaty would grant France certain privileges and rights in Ethiopia, including the establishment of a French consulate in Addis Ababa. However, Menelik II was wary of foreign interference in his country and refused to sign the treaty. Despite Menelik II's rejection, Marchand and his mission continued to press their claims in Ethiopia, leading to tensions between the two parties. The arrival of the French mission in Addis Ababa was met with resistance from the Ethiopian people, who saw the French presence as a threat to their sovereignty. This photograph shows the French mission members, dressed in their military uniforms, marching through the streets of Addis Ababa, surrounded by Ethiopian soldiers and civilians. The scene is one of tension and uncertainty, as the future of Ethiopia's relationship with France hangs in the balance. The photograph is a reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history between France and Ethiopia, and the lasting impact that European colonialism had on the African continent. It also highlights the importance of diplomacy and respect for sovereignty in international relations.
