EDITORS COMMENTS
1 December 1866: The French Finally Depart from Rome, Leaving Pope Pius IX Alone to Fend for Himself The image captures a significant moment in Italian history as the French troops, who had occupied Rome since 1849, began their withdrawal from the city on 1 December 1866. The French presence in Rome had been a source of tension between Italy and France, as the Italian unification movement gained momentum. In the background of the photograph, we see the French troops marching out of the city, their flags and banners fluttering in the wind. The soldiers, dressed in their uniforms, are seen carrying their belongings and supplies, ready to depart. The scene exudes a sense of finality, as the French finally comply with the demands of the Italian government to leave Rome. At the forefront of the image, we see Pope Pius IX, dressed in his papal robes, standing alone on the balcony of the Apostolic Palace, overlooking the city. His expression is somber, perhaps reflecting the uncertainty of the future. The pope had been a vocal opponent of Italian unification and had relied on French protection to maintain his power in the face of Italian nationalist forces. With the French departure, he was left to fend for himself. The historical significance of this event was enormous. The French withdrawal marked the end of the French occupation of Rome and paved the way for the unification of Italy under King Victor Emmanuel II. The Italian army entered Rome on 20 September 1870, marking the completion of the Italian unification process. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in Italian history, as the French finally departed from Rome, leaving Pope Pius IX to face an uncertain future. The image captures the sense of transition and the complex political dynamics at play during this period.
