EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of French colonization in Vietnam during the late 19th century. Taken in October 1884, the image depicts French General Charles-Théophile Nepveu de Villemeur, also known as Negrier, leading his troops and sailors into the town of Lang-Kep in Tonkin, Vietnam. The Chinese defenders, who had been occupying the town, were decisively defeated in this battle, resulting in heavy losses. The defeat of Lang-Kep was a significant event in the French conquest of Tonkin, which began in 1883 and lasted until 1887. The French had long coveted the rich resources of Indochina, and the defeat of the Chinese forces paved the way for their expansion into the region. The photograph shows General Negrier, dressed in his military uniform, standing at the head of his troops as they march into the town. Chinese soldiers and civilians, many of them bearing the scars of battle, can be seen in the background, fleeing from the advancing French forces. The destruction wrought by the battle is evident in the smoky, chaotic scene. Among the heavy losses suffered by the Chinese were several mandarins, or high-ranking officials, who had been leading the defense of the town. Their defeat marked the end of Chinese rule in Tonkin and the beginning of French colonial dominance. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex history of colonialism in Vietnam and the far-reaching consequences of military conflicts. It offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of great upheaval and transformation in the region.
