EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures three renowned French generals, Joseph Joffre, Pierre de Castelnau, and Maurice Sarrail (Pau is identified only by his surname), on the Western Front during the First World War on 1 February 1915. The trio, dressed in their distinctive military uniforms, are seen deep in conversation, with Castelnau and Joffre intently studying the terrain through binoculars. At the time, Joffre, as the Commander-in-Chief of the French Army, was leading the Allied forces in their efforts to counter the German onslaught. Castelnau, then the commander of the 1st Army, was a key figure in the Battle of Artois and the Battle of Champagne. Sarrail, who would later become the commander of the 6th Army, was instrumental in the successful defense of Verdun in 1916. The image offers a rare glimpse into the strategic planning and decision-making process during the Great War. The generals' intense focus on the battlefield underscores the gravity of the situation and the immense pressure they faced to turn the tide of the war in favor of the Allies. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men and the countless others who fought during this pivotal period in world history. This photograph is part of the Robert Hunt Library collection at the Imperial War Museum and is available for research and educational purposes through Mary Evans Picture Library.
