The Avant-Garde, meaning "advance guard" in French, was a military tactic used to precede the main body of troops in battle. Comprised of select and highly trained soldiers, the Avant-Garde was responsible for scouting the terrain, identifying obstacles, and seeking out signs of the enemy. In this image, we see the Avant-Garde soldiers, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, marching steadfastly through a rural landscape. Their determined expressions and focused gaze suggest the importance of their role in the larger military strategy.
