EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts a pivotal moment in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, specifically the retreat of the French Army from Carignan on August 30th. The Prussian forces, led by General Helmuth von Moltke, had successfully driven the French back in this action, which preceded the larger and more famous Battle of Sedan. The defeat at Sedan, on September 1st, is considered the biggest military defeat in French history and ultimately led to the French capitulation. In this image, the French soldiers are shown in disarray, with their flags lowered and their morale seemingly broken, as they flee from the advancing Prussian troops. The importance of the Battle of Carignan lies in its role as a precursor to the larger and more decisive Battle of Sedan, which marked the beginning of the end for the French military resistance in the Franco-Prussian War. This historical engraving, from the Illustrated London News, provides a visual representation of the events that unfolded on that fateful day in August 1870, offering a glimpse into the past and the complexities of the Franco-Prussian War.
