1850s 1858 Drawn Frederick Friedrich I Ii Prussia Wilhelm

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, Crown Prince Frederick William of Prussia, later to become Kaiser (Emperor) Friedrich III of Germany, is depicted in the late 1850s, prior to his marriage to Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The image, drawn from life, captures the regal presence and distinguished air of the future monarch. Born on October 27, 1831, in the Berlin Palace, Frederick William was the eldest son of King Frederick William IV of Prussia and Elisabeth of Bavaria. His father's death in 1861 led to his ascension to the throne as Crown Prince, and eventually, in 1888, to the imperial throne of Germany. At the time of this portrait, Frederick William was preparing for his marriage to Princess Victoria, which took place on January 25, 1858, in Coburg, Saxony. The union was significant as it strengthened the ties between the Prussian and Saxon royal families and helped to improve the political situation in Germany. The image shows Frederick William in his early thirties, with a full beard and a serious expression. His regal attire, including the Prussian uniform, emphasizes his royal status. The artist has skillfully captured the intricacies of the crown prince's facial features, from the prominent nose to the furrowed brow, conveying a sense of determination and intensity. The portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a future monarch, a man who would go on to rule Prussia and Germany during a tumultuous period in European history. Frederick William's reign was short-lived, lasting only 99 days, but his legacy as a champion of liberal reforms and a defender of the German language and culture endures.
