EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite dressing room of Franks Hall, located in Horton Kirby, Kent. The year is 1894, and Charles Latham skillfully captured the beauty of this Elizabethan house through his photolithograph. Franks Hall, once a magnificent estate, had sadly fallen into disrepair during the 19th century. However, Robert Bradford came to its rescue when he purchased the property in 1860. With dedication and passion for restoration, Bradford revived both the house and gardens to their former glory. He even added a stunning suite of Moorish-style rooms that further enhanced its grandeur. Previously owned by the Bathurst family, Franks Hall found its way back into their hands when Earl Bathurst acquired it in 1911. Determined to erase any traces of unfavorable alterations made during the nineteenth century - including an unconventional Moorish bathroom - Earl Bathurst embarked on an ambitious project. The efforts put forth by Earl Bathurst were so commendable that they garnered attention from Country Life magazine in July 1913. Their article celebrated his successful endeavor in eliminating these unsightly modifications while preserving the authenticity and charm of Franks Hall. This remarkable print serves as a testament to both Charles Latham's artistic talent and Historic England's commitment to capturing and preserving our nation's architectural heritage for future generations to admire and appreciate.
