EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Franklin Pierce (1804-1869), the 14th President of the United States, during his tenure from 1853 to 1857. Pierce, an American statesman from New Hampshire, is best known for leading the country through a tumultuous period in American history, including the Mexican-American War and the beginning of the Civil War. Born in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, Pierce rose through the ranks of the Democratic Party, serving as a member of the House of Representatives and the Senate before being elected to the presidency. In his inaugural address, Pierce called for the acquisition of Cuba, which sparked controversy and set the stage for the Mexican-American War. The war resulted in the United States gaining California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Despite these territorial gains, Pierce's presidency was marked by political turmoil and personal tragedy. His wife, Jane Appleton Pierce, died by suicide just months after his election, and his administration was plagued by corruption scandals. Pierce's handling of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which allowed for the expansion of slavery into new territories, also contributed to the growing tensions between the North and South that would eventually lead to the Civil War. This photograph, taken in 1857, shows Pierce in the prime of his presidency, with a stern expression and piercing gaze. The image captures the gravity and weight of the responsibilities that rested on his shoulders during this pivotal time in American history. Pierce's presidency marked a turning point for the country, as it set the stage for the Civil War and the eventual end of slavery. This powerful portrait serves as a reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history of American politics and leadership.
