EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determined and resolute faces of Sir John Franklin and his officers as they prepared for their ill-fated 1845 expedition to find the Northwest Passage. From left to right, we see Couch (Mate), Fairholme, Osmer (Purser), des Voeux (Mate), Crozier, Franklin, and Fitzjames. Their expressions convey a sense of purpose and unwavering commitment to the exploration, which would ultimately result in the loss of all three ships and the lives of all but 15 of the 129 men aboard. Franklin, a veteran naval officer and former Governor of Tasmania, had long been fascinated by the possibility of discovering a navigable Northwest Passage through the Arctic. With the support of the British Admiralty, he set sail on HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, accompanied by a crew of experienced officers and men. The photograph was likely taken shortly before the ships set sail from Greenhithe, England, on May 19, 1845. The crew's well-maintained uniforms and the pristine condition of the ships attest to their readiness for the arduous journey ahead. However, the harsh Arctic conditions, combined with unforeseen challenges, would prove to be insurmountable. The fate of Franklin and his crew remains one of the greatest mysteries in polar exploration history. Their disappearance sparked numerous search parties and expeditions, which continued for decades. The discovery of the ships' remains in 2014 and the subsequent recovery of artifacts have shed new light on the circumstances of their demise. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of their courage and determination in the face of the unknown.
