EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, taken in 1910, the notorious American outlaw Frank James is seen in a sobering light, a far cry from the daring and elusive bandit he once was. Frank James, born on January 7, 1824, was the older brother of the infamous Jesse James, and together they became members of the James-Younger gang, one of the most notorious criminal organizations in American history. The James-Younger gang was known for their audacious train robberies, bank heists, and stagecoach hold-ups, terrorizing the Midwest during the late 1860s and 1870s. Frank James, who joined the gang later than his younger brother, was a skilled horseman and marksman, making him an invaluable member. Despite their criminal exploits, the James brothers gained a certain level of celebrity status among the public, with many admiring their brazenness and daring escapes. However, as the law closed in on them, Frank James and his brother Jesse went their separate ways. Jesse was killed by a mob in 1882, but Frank managed to elude capture for several more years, living in various hiding places around the country. In this photograph, Frank James, now in his late 80s, is seen wearing a suit and tie, looking directly at the camera with a serious expression. The image belies the adventurous and dangerous life he once led, a reminder that even the most notorious outlaws grow old. Frank James died on February 18, 1915, at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of crime and intrigue that continues to captivate the American public. This photograph, taken in the twilight of Frank James' life, offers a rare glimpse into the life of one of America's most notorious criminals, a man who once terrorized the Midwest with his gang of train robbers and bank bandits.
